Birth Doula FAQ
Honest, plainspoken answers to the questions families ask most: what a doula actually does, how labor support works, and how to get started with Jenn in Orange County.
What does a birth doula do?
A birth doula provides continuous emotional, physical, educational, and practical support before, during, and after birth. That means helping you prepare and plan during pregnancy, offering comfort measures like counter pressure and positioning through labor, and staying close in the first moments after baby arrives. Jenn is a calm, knowledgeable presence in the room so you and your partner feel steady and supported the whole way through.
When should I hire a doula?
Many families reach out in the second trimester, which gives plenty of time for two prenatal visits, a birth plan, and a real relationship before labor begins. That said, there is no wrong time to start. If you are further along and feeling unsure, it is still worth a conversation, and the free consultation is the best way to see if it is a fit.
Do you replace my doctor, midwife, or partner?
No. A doula never replaces your medical team or your partner. Jenn provides non-medical emotional, physical, educational, and practical support, and she does not perform clinical tasks or make medical decisions. She works alongside your doctor, midwife, and nurses, and she helps your partner stay involved and confident rather than stepping in for them.
Do you support hospital births?
Yes. Jenn regularly supports families through hospital births, and she is comfortable working alongside hospital staff and your provider. Wherever you are giving birth, her role is the same: to keep you calm, comfortable, and supported while your medical team handles the clinical care.
Do you support VBAC births?
Yes. Jenn supports VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean), and many families come to her specifically for calm, knowledgeable VBAC support. She offers steady reassurance and gentle but firm guidance through the moments that can feel the most intense, while always working alongside your provider.
What areas of Orange County do you serve?
Jenn serves families across Orange County, California, including San Clemente, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo, and Ladera Ranch. If you are not sure whether you are in range, just ask: she is happy to let you know.
What happens during the free consultation?
The consultation is simply a relaxed conversation about your hopes, your questions, and whether Jenn is the right fit for your family. There is no pressure and no obligation. It is a chance for you to get a feel for how she works and to ask anything on your mind before deciding.
When are you on call?
With the Birth Doula Package, Jenn is on call for you from 37 to 42 weeks, so she is ready whenever labor begins. Throughout your pregnancy you also have ongoing support by phone, text, and email, so you are never left wondering or waiting for answers.
Do you offer birth photography?
Yes. Photography is Jenn's first love, and birth photography can be added to the Birth Doula Package for $750, or booked on its own for $2,000. She captures the real story of your birth quietly and respectfully as it unfolds. You can learn more on the birth photography page.
Do you offer lactation support?
Yes. Jenn is a Certified Lactation Educator Specialist, and breastfeeding and latch help is included as appropriate during your immediate postpartum support. Standalone lactation help is also available if you need it later on. You can learn more on the lactation support page.
How does payment work?
Pricing is clear and confident. The Birth Doula Package is $3,000, with birth photography available as an add-on for $750. Birth Photography Only is $2,000, and Active Labor Support Only is $2,000. The details and the option that fits you best are discussed at your free consultation. You can see what each package includes on the birth doula services page.
What if labor is long?
Jenn stays with you through active labor, however long it takes. Long labors can feel discouraging, and that is exactly when continuous support matters most. She keeps you in the right headspace with counter pressure, positioning, and steady reassurance, so you never have to face the hard stretches on your own.
What if I need a C-section?
If your birth becomes a cesarean, Jenn still supports you and your partner emotionally and practically. A doula's support adapts to whatever your birth becomes, offering calm reassurance and a familiar presence during a moment that can feel overwhelming. She does not make medical decisions, and she works alongside your medical team every step of the way.
Can my partner still be involved?
Absolutely. Your partner stays central to your birth, and Jenn supports them too. She shows them how to help, offers a steadying hand when they need a break, and helps the two of you lean on each other with confidence. She is there to add support, never to take their place.
A quick, honest note: a doula provides emotional, physical, educational, and practical support. A doula does not provide medical care, perform clinical tasks, or make medical decisions, and does not replace your doctor, midwife, nurse, or partner. Jenn works alongside your medical team so you feel fully supported, start to finish.
Still have a question?
The best answers come from a real conversation. The free consultation is simply that: your hopes, your questions, and how Jenn can support you. No pressure, no obligation, just a chance to see if she's the right fit for your family.
